Why we must stop to talk about Europe as a „project“ and create a European republic
Wow! Europe´s B-day. Of course not Europe´s, but the European Union´s. 60 years ago, a group of statesmen (no women, just to mention) solemnly signed the Treaty of Rome and brought the Coal and Steel Community into life. Today, the EU is 10 years older than me, 20 years younger than my father. It is about the age of my niece and my nephew in the UK. Which brings us straight to the point. My father was working for disarmement in the time of the cold war, he saw the EU in the light of peace-building. In the 1990ies, when Austria decided to join the EU family, I was driven by curiosity and hope for a better world. For my sisters´ children in the country that chose to leave this community of states, it is a source of uncertainty for the future.
